Some days I walk into the reception space at a wedding and I am literally stopped in my tracks by how beautifully it is decorated! Chris & Ashley’s wedding reception was one of those days! Jean from The Floral Palette and her crew were bustling around the room transforming it into the most elegant and sultry space I’d ever seen. Gold candelabras dripping with flowers, fresh fruit cut on the table as part of her arrangements, it was stunning from start to finish!
Since I have been dying to feature their gorgeous reception again on the blog I thought I’d ask the woman behind the curtain all about how she created this amazing space for our bride! Everyone meet Jean, owner, and florist extraordinaire of The Floral Palette. She is definitely someone to talk to if you want wedding flowers in Fredericksburg, VA! Take it away Jean!

This past year I was contacted by a gorgeous young woman with very specific ideas and inspiration for her big day – I love working with brides that have a general knowledge for what they are looking for with a creative mindset. That opens the doors to endless design options and of course, my mind immediately starts to brainstorm!
Prior to my consultations, I send out a questionnaire, just a little something that allows me to get know you and your interests along with your future husband. This gives me an idea of things you like or don’t like. Unfortunately, 9 times out of 10 my brides neglect to fill this out or skip over those questions, which of course, in the end, is not that big of a deal, but I love to get a sense of who I’m working with before I throw out some ideas. Unlike others, Ashley answered all my questions with details galore. I learned that she and her husband are involved with the United States Marine Corps and they seemed to be a very outgoing, adventurous couple.
Creating the right vibe
Ashley was looking for a 1920s inspired, unique, sultry yet elegant, speakeasy vibe. With the Silk Mill in old town Fredericksburg being the chosen venue, which I knew would be perfect for this style, my mind started to paint these images of arrangements that I knew she would love. A few things that stood out to me in her requests that I truly appreciated were the use of oranges which is thought to bring good luck to a bride, succulents because her Grandmother had a succulent garden, eucalyptus because the scent reminds her of California and lastly the use of blue thistle because Ashley and her now husband Chris are both of Scottish descent.
Ashley was looking for flower arrangements that had her guests saying “never seen flowers like this before” and she was wanting to include “color and texture” throughout the whole table. Again my heart was full and my mind was running wild with ideas on how to integrate all these details! Ultimately I ended up incorporating numerous styles of elegant, sultry flowers some of which included hanging amaranthus, black and red scabiosa that danced around the arrangements, fruit, and greenery throughout the entire table setting – allowing everyone at the tables to enjoy the flowers.
Adding texture to your florals
Some might think a unique aspect of these table arrangements were the use of fruit – kiwi, oranges, red cactus pears, black and red grapes to be specific. Although this might seem obscure to some and out of the box, I have actually been using this technique to incorporate texture to my flower arrangements for years, which is why I enjoy seeing this trend resurface. Fruit offers a natural beauty inside and out. I happened to cut one of the red cactus pears in half and was astonished at the color it offered, I knew at once that was the way to feature the texture and unique, bold color of this fruit to the table setting.
The Wallace Wedding was one for the books, overall the elegance and beauty of the entire wedding was breathtaking. Thankfully we have these moments saved forever with the amazing Melissa Arelena who did an outstanding job at not only capturing the day but capturing the true essence and beauty of every detail that went into this wedding. I am honored to have been a part of such a special day celebrating the marriage of these two individuals.
